City breaks: Verona, Italy

· ·

“In fair Verona” there are so many wonderful options for a city break! We are sharing some of our top choices over the next few weeks on smaller city destinations. These are stops that are easily added to a longer itinerary. Or, they are wonderful stops that can stand alone as a shorter holiday.

Verona is one of Italy’s most enchanting city. In several days, Verona can be easily visited. The surrounding area is as interesting as the city itself. Easily connected by rail to so many other special Italian spots, it is the perfect city break on an Italian holiday. Adding on Venice, or a few days in Milan – a winter trip through the dolomites or even a short flight to other Mediterranean destinations – the possibilities are endless!

A bit about Verona

This pretty city is located in the region of Veneto in northern Italy. A UNESCO world heritage site, it is also the home of Romeo and Juliet. You can visit Juliet’s balcony, and leave a love note of your own. To add, it is known for its history, culture, music and architecture.

Getting to Verona couldn’t be easier on a northern Italian holiday. Trains are plentiful as it is located halfway through between Milan and Venice. Verona also has an international airport that is used frequently by travelers heading to the nearby Dolomites (another UNESCO site).

It’s a city that is incredibly easy to walk – and you’ll want to! So many sites in Verona are seen and experienced just by walking through them and absorbing the culture and atmosphere.

Sites around the city

Piazza della Erbe was once the town’s focal point, the forum, during the time of the Roman Empire. Now, its considered one of Italy’s most beautiful piazze. It is a great spot for a drink, lunch and people watching.

Another important attraction of Verona is its arena, located at Piazza Bra. Dating back to the 1st Century, this arena is one of a few that’s still functional. It is also the best-preserved Roman amphitheater in the world. In the summer, there are frequent operas and concerts. In the off season or a day when there is no show, you can enter and admire the spectacular surroundings.

Torre dei Lamberti towers in, literally, at 83 meters high. It’s a lovely spot to look over this spectacular city.
