Beaches for a Family Vacation: Croatia and Greece

· · · ·

Over the past month, we have shared some of our favorite beaches for a family vacation. Traveling with a family in the Mediterranean can be a dream come true! There is so much to see. One of the highlights of a Mediterranean summer trip, however, is a family vacation at the beach.

Traveling with kids can present its own unique set of challenges. Not all the beaches along the sea are suitable for kids! Even in countries practically surrounded by water, there are beaches that are better than others. It can be stressful researching what beaches are the best for kids of all ages. One of the benefits of working with a travel planner is that we do the work for you. We are also parents with kids (some still in diapers, some driving cars). These are experiences we have done ourselves on our own family vacations!

This week, we share with you some of our top choices for a family vacation at the beach in Croatia and Greece.

A family vacation to Crete (and Elafonissi Beach)

Crete is a great choice for families. It’s the largest island in Greece. It’s size and varied landscape mean that there is something for everyone.

For a family vacation at the beach, the west side of the island and the beaches in the Chania area are great. The beaches look like a postcard – white, sandy stretches. You are also close to the harbor where there are several waterfront restaurants.  There are also many activities from Crete that kids will love. Sea kayaking, paddle boards, boat trips – the options are endless.

Elafonissi beach jumped on the radar of many travelers a few years ago when it was named one of the best beaches in the world. There is good reason why! This gorgeous beach is a great choice for a family vacation – or really anyone. The water is warm and crystal clear. Families will feel safe with their kids and the backdrop is truly breathtaking.

Faliarki Beach, Rhodes

Rhodes is is a great family vacation spot for families with toddlers to teenagers. There are lots of activites like the Faliraki water park, go karts, or numerous shallow and sandy beaches.

Faliraki beach is one of the most organized on the island. It has shallow, clear water and a fine, sandy beach. What makes this beach a great stop on a family vacation are the services! There is the fun Faliraki Water Park as well as a small amusement park. This large beach also has lots of activities for adventurous adults as well, from jet skiiing to even bungee jumping. This is one of the islands most popular spots, so it can get crowded in the busy summer months!

A family vacation on the beaches of Naxos, Greece

Naxos is a great choice for a family vacation in Greece. The island is large enough that it offers something for kids of all ages. At the same time, it’s small enough that makes getting around easy! It’s also considered one of the most beautiful in Greece. Many say that it’s like Santorini without the stairs!

There are two excellent beaches for a family vacation with children. Saint George (Agios Georgios) and Agia Anna (St. Anna) are our top choices. The water is shallow and warm, there are lifeguard services and several restaurants and beach bars. There are over 30 beaches on the island of Naxos, some of which are great for teenagers and have water sports offered. Regardless of which one you pick, Naxos is one of our favorite spots for a Greek getaway – for families or couples.

Bačvice Beach, Split, Croatia

Bačvice Beach is one of the most well known in Croatia and is conveniently located close to the center of the city of Split. This a top choice for a family vacation at the beach. The shore is long and sandy and the water starts off shallow. It’s a beach where children of all ages can have a relaxing day at the sea without worrying about big waves. There are also ample changing rooms and options for sports on the seaside. At night, the area buzzes with local action as bars and nightclubs open up on the seafront in the evening. It’s popular for good reason!

Sakarun Beach, Zadar, Croatia

A family vacation at Sakarun Beach looks like its from a photoshoot. This golden sand beach is famous for its clean, clear water. It’s also easy to get to this beach via the public shuttle from nearby Bozava. There are plenty of options for lunch with bars and snack shops around the beach. The surrunding pine forest is also a welcome respite from the sun if you are planning to spend the whole day here.

This is also one of the calmest beaches in the area in another sense – even in the busiest months of the summer, this beach is rarely unbearably crowded!

Vela Przina Beach, Korčula, Croatia

Korčula is one of of our favorite Croatian islands for a holiday. Vela Przina Beach is an ideal sot for a family vacation day at the beach. The beach is actually a small bay that is protected from the waves. Located at the south of the island, this means the sea is calm as it’s protected from waves. This shallow, clear stretch of paradise is great for little ones who want to spend the day splashing in peace. There are also many options for cafes and restaurants, and also several vendors who can rent you an umbrella for the day.
